Earlier this month, the Pantone Color Institute announced its choice color for 2016. For the first time, the color systems company selected two colors blended together – Rose Quartz and Serenity.
Hues of baby pink and baby blue, mark this year’s color choice.
In the announcement, Leatrice Eiseman, Pantone Color Institute Executive Director stated,
“As consumers seek mindfulness and well-being as an antidote to modern day stresses, welcoming colors that psychologically fulfill our yearning for reassurance and security are becoming more prominent… Joined together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace.”
Eiseman also noted,
“In many parts of the world we are experiencing a gender blur as it relates to fashion, which has in turn impacted color trends throughout all other areas of design.”
“This more unilateral approach to color is coinciding with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity, the consumer’s increased comfort with using color as a form of expression, a generation that has less concern about being typecast or judged and an open exchange of digital information that has opened our eyes to different approaches to color usage.”
2015 marked a shift in social culture. The transgender awareness and gay civil rights were at the fulcrum of our social conscience – we saw a new level of awareness with the Supreme Court’s same sex marriage ruling and the transition of Caitlyn Jenner. Seeing the blend of these colors seems to prompt an expression to use colors that traditionally signified established gender labels – blue for boys, pink for girls.
The selection of these two colors is significant because, the color of the year usually sets the tones (pun intended) across multiple design industries – from fashion to cosmetics to home decor.
Sephora has already released lipstick to commemorate this year’s selection.
In home decor, these two colors can be incorporated easily through throw pillows and other fabrics. Both Serenity and Rose Quartz marry nicely with a variety of browns, grays, and silver.
How will you incorporate these two colors into your world this year? A new pair of slacks? A top? A pillow?
Sending you dreamy bliss,
